FUTURE OF DEMOCRACY

- Third year

- Group project

The prevalence of misinformation and targeted advertising on social media and other online platforms is testing the efficacy of our democratic systems. This was highlighted in the 2016 Brexit campaign as well as the US presidential election with the involvement of Cambridge Analytica. We predict that novel problems will emerge by 2030, which will need to addressed ahead of time to avoid the pitfalls of the past.

My group and I have designed a system to combat this misinformation. Our aim is to train the electorate to critically assess all media, creating a balanced and less polarised democracy. The solution includes technologies that will be more developed and embraced by 2030, such as Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT), Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Augemented Reality (AR). We hope to win the arms race against those with malicious intentions to misinform voters.
